  Getting Rid of Replication Fields

Recently I was called out to help on a database that was running really slow. One of the things I came across early in the investigation was that the database at one stage used Access replication technology. So I set about removing the replication fields. I have described this in an updated article on index fields.

Note: In case you didn't know it, replication technology was dropped in the version of Jet used for the Access 2007 ACCDB databases. In my view, replication was always way too ambitious for a database that thrives on local networks.

Export from Access to an RSS Feed

If your boss or client mentions that they would like you to create an RSS feed from your database, I would suggest that you take a good look at this page. This newsletter is written as an RSS feed to the following location. http://www.vb123.com/news/rss1.xml

If you need help publishing from a database to an RSS 2.0 feed, contact Garry as we have been deploying RSS in our solutions for quite a while now.

  Danny takes on bitmasks

Querying data through bitmasks is a black art, Danny Lesandrini explains it in this article at Database Journal.

"Let me begin by revealing that I'm not an expert with bitmasks. However, this fact should bring a little comfort to the uninitiated because it means that anyone can implement multiple selections using a bitmask field and operators. Odds are, you've been using them for years, but simply didn't notice it. If you've ever set the properties of a message box using Intellisense, then you've used bitmasks. " Read on

How we use Basecamp from 37Signals to run our software business

A year ago I decided that it was time to crank the business up a bit and start using more contractors. When the work starting rolling in thanks to my more pro active marketing, so did the emails and files and the time sheets came in different forms. Quickly I felt like I was losing touch with my clients and projects and the Inbox took far too long to organize. Here is the story about how we used BaseCamp to help out...
