Read the latest Access Unlimited newsletter online

In March I was lucky enough to be invited to Seattle to the Microsoft MVP Conference. Whilst there I joined 1500 other developers and technology lovers in cheering on Bill Gates and learning a little about Microsoft's latest and greatest software innovations. This was all relatively interesting until I headed off with 35 other fun loving Access MVP's to the Access only sessions (and a few beers). This to me was fantastic as I got to chew the fat with people who all believe that Access is one of the best tools on the planet. We also met a number of the Access development team and I can guarantee that they are also passionate about the product and have quite a lot more resources than they had a few years ago.

I hope you enjoy the latest newsletter and some of the web sites of my new friends.

Roger's Access Library

Roger Carlson, another Access MVP that I met in Seattle has this to say about his website.

"A compendium of Microsoft Access routines, each separated into its own sample database. Each database illustrates one or more possible solutions to a single problem."

If you need help with Access database projects , we have some talented and experienced people who are based in the Eastern states of Australia. So if are having trouble with an Access database, need help doing the tricky stuff like upgrading to SQL Server or simply need a mentor, call me on (02) 9665 2871 or email me at access@gr-fx.com

Otherwise if you are a developer, I am interested in taking to people who can walk into a client's office, talk specifications, build good data models, sort out messy Access applications and keep the users happy. This is not full time work and may only amount to a single project or two a year. If this is you, contact me by email. If you have contacted me, don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you.

New Version of the Workbench For Microsoft Access Released

New Feature: Latest beta version now is supporting Access 2007

Find out all the improvements to our popular Access management and development tool on this page.
P.S. The Workbench is a program that will help you manage your Microsoft® Access databases. The Workbench will work out if a database is in Access 97 or Access 2000/XP/2003 format and open the appropriate version of Microsoft Access. It will allow you to see the users/computers using your database, lock out new users so that you can do maintenance and has some very easy check boxes so that you can compact, compile, decompile and backup your database as databases or in zip format. You can easily switch between and organize your Access databases by storing them as favorites, make desktop shortcuts and rapidly switch between workgroup accounts. You can view and change the Startup Properties of your database in a few seconds as well as make an mde database without opening the database.

Sending a SMS message from an Access Database

Steve Schapel, an Access MVP from New Zealand, outlines how to send an Sms message using ftp from an Access database.

Comments from a user on this

Further, the link to the article on SMS is better than you may think as it, of course, contains a link to the provider, Clickatell; but they have this great SMS resource page with links to a bunch of useful info:

http://www.clickatell.com/brochure/sms_info.php

On the other hand, the article itself sports typically slow SQL code as used by many VB programmers thinking they are programming in ASP. I'm sure you will agree that it would have been far speedier to use DAO throughout the function to replace the endless Execute statements with "Insert into .." commands. I realise, that the article as is "exists" and at least represents a starting point, but - not doubting the Chilkat FTP component (I use Chilkat components myself and they are excellent) - for Access developers the COM API which Clickatell offers seems to be much more interesting.

As you can see, some of your receivers do read your newsletter!
Happy Easter.

Revised ~ Don't Delete Your Old Versions of Access / Office Accidentally

If you are an Access developer and are about to install Microsoft Office 2007 on a computer that already has an earlier version of Microsoft Access, read these instructions carefully or you may delete your old versions of Access. This article is important because the Office 2007 setup wizard deletes old versions as a matter of course.

This page has been revised because of Vista install issues.

Repair Damaged Access Databases

vb123.com offers an online repair system for Access databases. Included in the latest version is the option to only repair tables rather than fix the whole database. This reduces the cost of exercise. The system is setup so that your data is encrypted and in most cases, you should be able to recover a corrupt database in less than 30 minutes elapsed time.
